Nahargarh Fort is one of the magnificent forts situated on the mighty Aravalli Range in Jaipur. It is infamous for its incredible architecture and offers a splendid view of the pink city. Once upon a time, the fort was a part of the city’s three-point defense strategy, which included the Jaigarh Fort and the Amer Fort. Today, it is the center of attraction for travelers because of its 300 years of glorious past and vintage structure. You can read the blog if you’re intrigued to know more about the fort’s history and architecture.

History

Nahargarh Fort was constructed in 1734 by the then Maharaja of Jaipur, Sawai Jai Singh II. Situated on the lofty Aravalli Hills, the fort was a retreat for the hunting expeditions of the royal family. The fort was originally named Sudarshangarh but was later renamed as Nahargarh. It was believed that the construction of the fort was obstructed by the spirit of a Rathore Prince named Nahar Singh Bhomia. Originally, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh found this property which once belonged to the Prince, and thought of raising a fort on it. But, the spirit was not happy with the idea. When the construction began, it was found that everything constructed was destroyed the next day. When Maharaja Sawai Singh got to know about this, he constructed a small temple inside the premises of the fort and renamed the fort to honor the Prince.

The massive walls of the fort reach up to the Jaigarh Fort and form a wall of defense around the city of Jaipur. Throughout its history, the fort never faced any attack. However, it has witnessed several significant events that took place within its premises, including the Treaty between the Marathas and the rulers of Jaipur in the 18th century. Also, in 1857, during India’s first rebellion for freedom, the king of Jaipur provided protection to many Europeans living in that region.

In 1868, the fort was renovated by Sawai Ram Singh, and in 1880, Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh turned the fort into a luxury retreat. He commissioned Raj Imarat to make the fortress within the fort that would be used for recreation purposes. The new place was named Madhavendra Bhawan. This magnetic structure with wall paintings, exquisite interiors, and stucco patterns was designed by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, the architect of Jaipur.

Architecture

Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur, is designed in the Indo-European architectural style. The left side of the fort has an entrance gate called ‘Tadigate’, with a temple dedicated to the deity of the Jaipur rulers. Besides this, there is one more temple inside the fort dedicated to Prince Nahar Singh Bhomia.

Inside the fortress, there is a two storied building called ‘Madhavendra Bhawan’ built by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh. It has separate suites for the king and his nine queens, each of which is adorned with a lobby, bedrooms, kitchen, and other essential sections. All these suites are connected through corridors decorated with stunning frescos, but they were built in a way that the king could visit any one of his queens without letting the other queens know. The fort also includes a large open-air space called Diwan-i-Aam, or the House of Commoners, where the king held his audience with his subjects and addressed their problems.

The fort has two step wells, one located within it and the other within the ramparts. The one outside the fort is the biggest, and it has also been featured in various Bollywood films. A differentiating feature of these wells is their asymmetrical design, which is not very common. This is primarily because these wells were constructed without altering the natural terrain of the mountains.
