Jantar Mantar is a popular tourist destination in Jaipur ( Pink City ). Jantar Mantar is a Sanskrit word that means calculating instrument. There are 19 instruments in the Jantar Mantar, which is located near City Palace, and Hawa Mahal in the middle of Jaipur city. It is also the UNESCO world heritage site.

History of Jantar Mantar Jaipur

It was built at the beginning of the 18th century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. The main reason behind this is considered that the Maharaja was obsessed with celestial objects. The 19 celestial bodies are used to calculate the time and movement of celestial bodies like the sun, the moon, and other planets.

Some of the instruments were built by 1728. The construction of the instruments was in the process until 1738. Temple in the Jantar Mantar was constructed under Pratap Singh from 1778 to 1803.

Maharaja Ram Singh completed restoring Jantar Mantar in 1876, and he also made instruments more durable by inserting the lead into them.

It is a conglomeration of very large stones and structures. It has the largest sundial in India. These instruments are based on Ptolemaic positional astronomy, which attracted many scientific minds from across the globe over the years.

Jantar Mantar was announced as a national monument in 1968, and it was restored in 2006.

It took 23 astronomers to build this marvel. It is made of local stones and marble. It is spread over 18000 square meters.

SInce 1961, Jantar Mantar has been maintained by the Archaeological Sites and Monuments, Rajasthan Government.

Best Jantar Mantar Jaipur Timing

It is open for visitors seven days a week from 9 PM to 5 PM. You can watch it any season but avoid visiting in the rainy season. Mid-day is considered the best time to visit Jantar Mantar.

  • October to February: 6.30 onwards

Visit City Palace

The city palace was the home of the royal family. This place is nearby Jantar Mantar and can be visited during the day. It is within walking distance.
